The Temple of Herakles

On July 22nd 2008, Barack Obama, Democratic nominee for president, stood alongside the Temple of Herakles and made a statement regarding US commitment to a successful termination of the Iraq and Afghan wars, started by George Bush and Tony Blair.

On the Citadel Mound Amman, overlooking the city is the Roman Temple of Hercules, constructed by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the 2nd Century CE. It's design is similar to the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus.

The massive temple, framed by six 33 foot columns was built by the Romans between 162 and 166 CE.

Built within a sacred precinct (temenos) measuring 400X200 feet, the Great Temple of Herakles (Hercules) measuring 100X80 feet is larger than any temple in Rome.
