Historic Cairo

The medieval quarter, in eastern Cairo is overlooked by the enormous fortification of the Citadel of Saladin, Commenced in 1176, it now houses three historic mosques.

Alongside the splendour of the Citadel and the three mosques built within its walls, lays the City of the Dead, Qarafat el Sharqiyya. Here amongst the thousands of tombs, ancient and modern, live many families scraping a day to day living.

From the walls of the Citadel the whole of Cairo is laid out before you, although the air in the city can be heavily polluted. From here, in the far south west, the Great Pyramids at Giza can be seen on the horizon, where the urban sprawl ends and the dessert starts.
